Melinda Haring, Deputy Director of the Eurasian Center at the Atlantic Council, called the "big problem" of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, which he has because of Russia and Hungary. She wrote about this in an article for the National Interest magazine.
According to the analyst, such a problem for Zelensky was Hungary's strategy for the reintegration of its historical lands in Ukraine. In particular, we are talking about Transcarpathia, where, according to her, a network of schools in Hungarian has been created. In addition, the community controls Hungarian newspapers, websites and TV channels in the west of the country, and many residents of this region have Hungarian citizenship.
Against this background, Hungary regularly blocks Ukraine's further integration into NATO and stubbornly raises a fuss about the language problem in Western Ukraine, Haring noted. In her opinion, this situation is in the hands of Russia, which can "further complicate the life of Kiev."
In 2019, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office added the Atlantic Council to the list of undesirable organizations.
On September 27, Gazprom signed two gas supply contracts with Hungary until the end of 2036. The Russian company will sell Budapest 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which will flow to Hungarian territory through Serbia and Austria.
On October 1, Gazprom announced the termination of the transit of Russian gas to Hungary through the territory of Ukraine. The Foreign Ministry of the country called the decision of the Hungarian authorities an unfriendly act to please the Kremlin and promised to appeal to the European Commission.
