A North Korean Foreign Ministry official has been executed for failing to secure medical supplies from Europe. This was reported by the South Korean edition of Daily NK, the tabloid The Mirror drew attention to the material.
According to a high-ranking source, the purchases are related to a general hospital in Pyongyang, which the leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, personally demands to open faster and equip it with high-quality equipment. It was supposed to be put into operation in the fall of 2020, but this has not yet been done.
As noted, at the end of March, Kim was informed about the ongoing preparation of the import of medical equipment from China. Deliveries were scheduled to begin at the end of April, and the contract was fully closed by the end of the year. This infuriated the North Korean leader, as he ordered the hospital to install first-class medical equipment made in Europe, including in Germany.
Daily NK notes that Kim, who was educated abroad in his youth, considers European medical institutions to be the best, and therefore the party has allocated a large budget for purchases. However, in fact, getting the equipment from Europe was not so easy: first, transportation to Asia was hampered by the coronavirus pandemic, and second, it was necessary to find a way to import it to North Korea, despite the sanctions.
At the same time, the strong indignation of the leader of the country was caused not by the purchases themselves in China, but by the fact that the contract was signed without his knowledge and approval. As a result, a 50-year-old employee who was responsible for import and export in the Foreign Ministry was executed. In addition, one of the high-ranking employees of the Ministry of Health of the country was dismissed. The publication notes that the deliveries were most likely approved by the higher management of the departments, but the middle-level staff took full responsibility.
The death penalty is not uncommon in North Korea. Earlier in April, it was reported that a North Korean official was executed because of complaints and slow work. In February, it became known that the authorities have toughened the punishment for the import and distribution of South Korean video materials-now it can face the death penalty. The maximum prison sentence for watching videos from South Korea was also increased.
