Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the US State Department imposed sanctions against nine high-ranking Cuban officials representing the Interior Ministry and the armed forces of the country, RIA Novosti reported.
Blinken stressed that visa restrictions against nine employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Cuban army were imposed against the background of "actions taken on November 15 and aimed at peaceful demonstrators." He added that officials were trying to "drown out the voices of the Cuban people through repression and unlawful detentions."
It is noted that among the nine mentioned persons there are high-ranking employees from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as senior officers of the Armed Forces of Cuba.
Earlier, the United States imposed sanctions against two Cuban officials and a military unit. The Ministry of Finance justified the restrictions imposed by "the continuation of aggressive persecution of people in connection with actions to suppress peaceful pro-democratic protests." Two persons were banned from transactions by the Office for Control of Foreign Assets, as well as their assets were frozen.
