п»їNFL Playoff Predictions: Who Will Win Super Bowl LV?
The NFL playoff field is bigger than ever. We have six games on wild-card weekend and 13 total, including Super Bowl LV. The NFL remains determined to play each game as scheduled, as was made clear throughout a regular season played amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There is, unfortunately, the possibly that positive tests will wipe out practices and make key players unavailable.
Despite the unpredictability, or maybe because of that potential chaos, our staffers have gravitated heavily toward the top seeds and favorites in our staff picks. Here's who our writers and editors have ticketed for the big game.
ALBERT BREER.
Chiefs 27, Saints 20 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
Lots of chalk here? Sure. But I think home field advantage will matter in this year’s playoffs with teams more worn down than normal. And I came really close to sticking with the Saints to win the whole thing—this really is the current group’s last shot, if you look at next year’s cap situation. But I can’t bet against Mahomes on the big stage.
JENNY VRENTAS.
Chiefs 31, Packers 24 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
Perhaps even harder than achieving success in the NFL is sustaining it. Which is why it has been so impressive that the defending champion Chiefs earned their conference’s top seed, while the Packers came back better after last season’s trip to the NFC championship game. We should point out that no team is entering the playoffs with more momentum than the Bills, which could potentially set up a thrilling AFC championship game matchup. But the Chiefs have continued to find ways to win games all season. They are now what the Patriots were for most of this millennium, the team it was unwise to pick against. While Andy Reid had a long wait for his first ring as a head coach, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the NFL who does not think it will be a much shorter wait for his second.
CONOR ORR.
Packers 42, Bills 31 MVP: Aaron Rodgers.
While this will come with a twinge of disappointment for a Bills fan base that is sensitive to the prospect of losing Super Bowls, they can walk away from this game against the Packers knowing it won't be another few decades before they are back.
MICHAEL ROSENBERG.
Chiefs 38, Packers 35 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
These predictions come down to guessing the upsets. Do I feel great about picking Washington to beat a much more talented Tampa team? I do not. But you’re looking at a man who picked the Lions to sneak into the playoffs. Public humiliation is sort of my thing. Washington has the formula to beat Tom Brady’s team: elite pass rush led by star rookie Chase Young and a QB, Alex Smith, who does not beat his own team.
The Super Bowl picks are admittedly boring, but 1) with only one team in each conference getting a bye, that feels like a big advantage, 2) Aaron Rodgers has deserved better than he has gotten in the postseason and is playing some of the best ball of his career, and 3) the Chiefs are still pretty clearly the best team in the league. They were also my preseason pick, which should count for absolutely nothing except that I am a stubborn fool who desperately clings to the rare occasions when I am correct.
GREG BISHOP.
Chiefs 35, Saints 21 MVP: Patrick Mahomes.
In the most uncertain of seasons, I’ve come to believe that there are four teams that stand slightly above the rest of the field: the Chiefs, Bills, Packers and Saints. As such, I don’t see as many upsets, except in the No. 4 vs. 5 games where the No. 4 seeds are evenly matched (Tennessee) or overly so (Washington). No reason to get cute here. The Bills have played as well as any team in football down the stretch, and I like Buffalo’s chances against Mahomes and Kansas City. What a game that should be. The Packers have played as well as any team this season, and I like Green Bay’s chances against New Orleans, particularly at home. But I picked the two teams that I think are the most balanced right now to win. That’s Kansas City and New Orleans, two franchises that can vanquish foes in myriad ways, that can run the ball or throw it, that can play stout D. These are two of the most fun offenses in the NFL to watch. Two of the best coaches. Two legendary quarterbacks. The difference, as always, is Mahomes, which he’ll prove in February to announce the NFL’s next dynasty in Kansas City.
ANDREW BRANDT.
Packers 38, Titans 17 MVP: Aaron Rodgers.
I picked the Packers over the Titans in the Super Bowl in August and I am not backing down now. As for the Packers, that now seems like the safest bet anyone could make, although I was somewhat lonely on that hill before the season. The Titans? Yes, I know their defense is suspect and they've had deficiencies but I believe they are a team built for the playoffs, especially in bad weather (as long as it is not snow at Lambeau Field, like we saw in Week 16). And yes, I believe they will be in the same position they were last year—visiting the Chiefs for the AFC championship—but this time will not let their lead evaporate.
Their storybook run, however, will end with MVP Aaron Rodgers showing why he is so much more valuable than near-MVP Derrick Henry. I’m biased as always, yes, but the Pack is back.
GARY GRAMLING.
Chiefs 24, Saints 19 MVP: Chris Jones.
My dark horse prediction of Colts over Eagles looks less likely by the day, and those fat cats in Washington won't let me pick a Chiefs-Bills Super Bowl, so I'll revert to what I deem the boring pick for unimaginative losers: The NFL's best team beating the NFL's most complete team. I don't have a whole lot more to say about this uninspired, chalky bracket. I picked the Rams over the Seahawks as my only real upset this coming weekend (the Ravens are three-point favorites, they don't count) because I had to pick one, but that's only in a scenario where Jared Goff and Andrew Whitworth return.
2021 Super Bowl MVP odds, picks: Tom Brady? Patrick Mahomes? Proven NFL expert fading Tyreek Hill.
SportsLine's Larry Harstein just revealed his top 2021 Super Bowl MVP pick.
Tyreek Hill can become just the eighth receiver to win the Super Bowl MVP award when he and the Kansas City Chiefs square off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Chiefs' 5-foot-10 dynamo had 15 receiving touchdowns during the regular season, which ranked second in the league. He also had 1,276 receiving yards, which ranked eighth. If he wins the Super Bowl MVP, he would join a list of receivers that includes Hall of Famers Fred Biletnikoff, Jerry Rice and Lynn Swann.
A former lead writer for Covers and The Linemakers, Hartstein combines a vast network of Vegas sources with an analytical approach he honed while working for Pro Football Focus. In the 2019 season, he went 58-39 on his against-the-spread NFL picks, giving his followers a profit of more than $1,500. He enters the 2021 Super Bowl on a strong 22-12 run on against-the-spread NFL picks. Anyone who has consistently followed him is way up.
Now, Hartstein has broken down the Super Bowl 55 MVP odds from every angle. You can head to SportsLine to see the picks.
Top 2021 Super Bowl MVP picks.
But Tampa Bay has shown it is well equipped to defend Hill and his big plays. The Buccaneers allowed just 46 passing plays of 20 yards or longer during the regular season. That ranked as the 10th fewest in the league. After their Week 13 bye, the Buccaneers were much better, giving up just eight passing plays of 20 yards or more, which was tied for the fewest in the NFL.
But Tampa Bay is one of the best teams in the league in limiting tight ends. The Buccaneers allowed just 9.7 yards per reception to tight ends in the regular season. Only two defenses allowed fewer. In the playoffs, Tampa Bay has been even better, limiting tight ends to 8.3 yards per catch.
How to make 2021 Super Bowl MVP picks.

Hayden Winks’ picks: The Super Bowl opening line started at Chiefs -3 with an over/under of 57.5 points, and I took the Chiefs and the under immediately after projecting a 30-24 final. The under is my favorite bet right now between the sides and total for a few reasons. Peter King’s Super Bowl LV preview.
Chiefs vs. Buccaneers Week 12 matchup (Rotoworld)
The Week 12 Final Score Is Misleading.
The final score could’ve been closer to 38-24 if the Chiefs hadn’t coughed up a red zone fumble and settled for two red zone field goals, if the Chiefs kept their foot on the gas in the second half instead of chewing clock, or if Mike Evans hadn’t scored two garbage-time touchdowns in the fourth quarter. This game was a textbook example of how the final score doesn’t tell the full story.
Super Bowl LV player projections from Hayden Winks (Rotoworld)
Kansas City Chiefs projections.
Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB : Patrick Mahomes†projection looks crazy — nobody ever projects for 350 yards — but the Chiefs are very likely to throw 35-50 times against the Bucs. (Projection here) Chiefs Wide Receivers : WR Tyreek Hill went so nuclear against the Bucs in Week 12 (12-263-3) that I spent the 30 minutes it took to clip all of his touches from that game (video). The Bucs switched up their coverages then, but Hill kept getting open. I don’t think the Bucs have a single corner capable of hanging with Hill when they go to Cover 3 or Cover 1 man. (Projection here)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers projections.
Tom Brady, Buccaneers QB: Tom Brady also projects well. The Bucs may run the ball early — Kansas City’s defense faced the 28th-highest neutral pass rate this season because the Chiefs are typically light in the box — but Tampa’s projected game script favors a pass-heavy game as three-point dogs. (Projection here) Buccaneers Wide Receivers : Before the NFC Championship, Antonio Brown was reportedly “day-to-day”. It’s unknown if he’ll play in the Super Bowl, but I left him for now. Even at full health, Brown is not an every-down player. He lines up wide only in three-receiver sets and could even be pushed by Scotty Miller, who scored a long touchdown last game. Richard Seymour: I was held during David Tyree helmet catch play in Super Bowl XLII.
Seymour claims he was held by 2-3 players the majority of the game.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady took to Twitter recently to campaign for his former teammate Richard Seymour to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brady believes that the New England Patriots wouldn't have been the dynasty that they were if it wasn't for Seymour's contributions.
In the process of this, Seymour thanked Brady but also stirred up some controversy.
Seymour replied to Brady's tweet and thanked his former teammate, in addition to urging Brady to win his seventh Super Bowl. The defensive tackle then added that Brady would've had already won another Super Bowl if he wasn't held on the famous Super Bowl XLII play where New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree made the miraculous helmet catch.
To add to the shade, Seymour also tagged former Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who put that throw in the perfect spot for Tyree in what is one of the most impressive catches in NFL history. Tyree's catch was on a key 3rd-and-5 in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. Giants ended up coming away with a 17-14 win when Manning hit Plaxico Burress for the game-winning touchdown.
Manning nearly was sacked on the play as two Patriots, one of which was Seymour, had Manning in their grasp. However, somehow Manning made it out of the scrum and was able to loft the ball up to Tyree.
Linemen were certainly able to get away with a lot more back in 2007, so Seymour claiming to be held most likely depends on who you ask. It's worth noting that the Super Bowl XLII loss cost the Patriots a perfect season and it would've been the first 19-0 season in NFL history.

Tom Brady admits Super Bowl XLII is his 'least favorite football memory'
Tom Brady will be playing in a record tenth Super Bowl this Sunday when he leads the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into battle again the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Brady is 6-3 in the big game — all with the New England Patriots — with two of those losses coming at the hands of the New York Giants in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. Those losses were keyed by a fierce Giants pass rush that pestered and battered Brady incessantly to the point where the might Patriots could only muster 17 points in both games.
During his media session with the media on Monday, Brady fielded a call form a familiar figure, former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who was an integral part of throwing Brady off his game in both losses.
“My guy,” Brady said when Osi introduced himself. “I’m happy I’m not playing you this weekend.”
In Super Bowl XLII, the Giants, 12.5-point underdogs, were facing down history as the Pats were one win away from completing the NFL’s first 19-0 season. It didn’t turn out the way many expected. The Giants’ defense was stellar and, as we all know, got some divine intervention on offense in the form of David Tyree’s miracle вЂhelmet catch.’
That game has significance this week because the man who orchestrated the plan that corralled Brady & Co. that day, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, is currently in the same role with the Chiefs. Brady knows all too well what to expect.
“That 2007 game is one my least favorite football memories, probably because I had a lot of you on top of me, with grass hanging off my back,” Brady told Umenyiora. “You guys had a great defense. You guys deserved to win.”
True. The Giants did deserve to win that game. Sure, they got some help but when it comes to who executed and who didn’t, it was the Giants who came up big when it counted and a lot of that had to do with Spagnuolo and the rest of Tom Coughlin’s staff.
