What is IQ?
IQ stands for "Intelligence Quotient" and is a measure of human intelligence obtained through standardized tests. The IQ scale is defined such that most people have an IQ between 80 and 120 (see below on interpreting your IQ score). It is not a very intuitive scale which is why many people want to see their IQ percentile or rarity, which is what our IQ percentile calculator above is ideal for.
Attempts to test intelligence date back to at least the 19-th century, but it wasn't until the mid 20 century that well-developed tests were invented. These tests come in many forms: some are mostly visual, others include language and basic math skills, 3-dimensional spatial tasks, and logic questions, but what is common to all of them is that they attempt to measure the g-factor, or the common factor in a person's performance on all tasks: intelligence. The g-factor was fist observed by British psychologist Charles Spearmen who noticed a high correlation in school grades across seemingly unrelated subjects and reasoned that these correlations reflect the influence of a general mental ability that was expressed in all kinds of mental tasks.
IQ test scores are valuable due to their high or moderate correlation to morbidity, mortality, school performance, job performance, income, and others. They are among the most well-tested and well-researched concepts in psychology and psychometrics. As with any other statistical estimate, IQ scores can be problematic when used on the individual level, e.g. while generally you would expect a person with a high IQ to perform well in an engineering job, they might in fact perform worse than somebody with a low IQ, even if they had the same training and experience. That said, if you are trying to gauge a person's fitness for a mental task an IQ score obtained from a reliable test is the single most informative piece of such information.
There are many IQ tests that one can take today, the most famous ones being Raven's Progressive Matrices, Cattell Culture Fair III, Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales, Thurstone's Primary Mental Abilities, Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Multidimensional Aptitude Battery II and Das-Naglieri cognitive assessment system [1] . Most of them are standardized so that their mean score is 100 and their standard deviation is 15. Some tests use a different standard deviation: 16, 24, etc. which is why our IQ calculator allows you to specify the standard deviation of the test that produced the intelligence quotient score.
The IQ scale - how to interpret an IQ score.
IQ tests are designed and updated on a regular basis such that they correspond to the populations they measure in a precise way: a score of 100 is the average score of the population and the distribution of IQ scores has a normal shape with a standard deviation of 15. Therefore, the IQ score is convenient to interpret and work with if you are a statistician, but if you are not into statistics the number itself will likely mean little to you. This is where our IQ percentile calculator can assist you in computing both the percentile of the population you are in and, correspondingly, the rarity of your score.
For example, with an IQ of 125 you will be in the top 5% and only 1 in 20 people selected at random from a large population will have a score equal to or higher than yours. The IQ scale below shows what percentage of the population falls within different ranges of IQ scores, for example 13.6% of people have an IQ score between 115 and 130, by definition.

Some numbers in the table above are approximated for easier reading, using the calculator above is the best way to get accurate numbers, whatever your IQ score is - 120, 130, 135, 140, 142, 160. You will see the percentiles (80th, 90th, 95th, 99th, etc.) according to the IQ scale and their rarity in terms of one in X people. Similarly you can use to see the 99th percentile IQ score (135), etc.
IQ scores obtained through rigorous tests delivered by a trained psychologist or psychometrician are usually the most reliable and will provide with information about on how your cognitive abilities compare to the general population other than the IQ score (e.g. spatial reasoning, verbal skills, auditory processing, short and long-term memory, etc. Standardized tests taken as part of a high-IQ society exam (e.g. Mensa) are also quite reliable. Finally, there are different kinds of free and paid online tests with varying degrees of reliability. In all cases you have to assume some measurement error, usually a 3-point measurement error is considered, so if your obtained score is 115 it is very likely that your true score is between 112 and 118. Taking several different tests at different times and taking their average is usually the best way to get a more reliable estimate of your general intelligence.
Younger people (below 18) need to be aware that an IQ score obtained from a standard IQ test is likely to be lower than actual, although not by much, especially if taking the test after 10 years of age. The reason why scores might be lower is that the brain is not yet fully developed (for males until they are 25!) and that environmental factors have not yet had time to express themselves fully.
Can I raise my IQ?
If the intelligence quotient score obtained from a test is concerned, then there are ways to study the test questions and memorize the answers if you know what test will be administered to you. However, this will only reflect your ability to take the test and not your general mental abilities. In this sense it is possible to raise your IQ, but why would you do that? You can cheat an IQ test or an IQ calculator, but not yourself or people you interact with.
If raising actual intelligence is concerned, then we do not really know how to do that. There is research that tells us that malnourishment, maltreatment, neglect, etc. during childhood and adolecence can result in lower intelligence, however there is no known way to improve the general intelligence of a person, despite attempts to identify mental tasks, dietary regimes, lifestyle changes etc. that can result in improvement in mental abilities.

How do you calculate SATВ® scores?
When the SATВ® revamped in March of 2016, scores became easier to calculate. The test went back to being scored out of a total possible 1600 points.
When calculating your SATВ® score, there are a few key components:
First, there is your reading test raw score. This raw score is equivalent to the number of SATВ® Reading questions you get correct on the test (there are 52 in total). From your raw score, a Reading Test Score is calculated between 10-40.
Next, there is your writing and language test raw score. This is equal to the number of questions you get right out of the 44 questions in this section. From your raw score, a Writing and Language Test Score is calculated between 10-40.
Adding your Reading Test Score and Writing and Language Test Score becomes your Reading and Writing Test Score (which ranges from 20-80). This number is multiplied by 10 to get your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section Score (between 200-800).
Finally, there is your math score. For this section, you add the raw score (the number of correct answers) from both the no calculator and calculator sections to get your math section raw score. This is then converted using a scoring chart to output your Math Section Score (between 200-800).
This means your total SATВ® score can range from 400-1600.
What’s the difference between SAT® raw scores and SAT® scale scores? How are they calculated?
As noted in the prior question, SATВ® raw scores are equivalent to the number of correct answers you got in a section. The SATВ® does not have a guessing penalty and only cares about the total number of correct answers.
SAT® scale scores are how your raw scores translate when converted to section scores — these are between 200-800 for the two sections (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math), to give you a total SAT® score between 400-1600.
What is a good SATВ® score? Decent score? Bad score?
A good SAT® score really depends on the student and their aspirations. For example, if you’re applying to Harvard and have a 1200 SAT® score, it’s unlikely you’ll get in since Harvard’s average score is typically over 1500. That being said, if you’re applying to Michigan State University with that same score, that would be competitive for your college application.
Generally, in our opinion, anything that falls into the top 30% of graduating high school students should be considered a good SATВ® score. When you review the 2019 SATВ® score trends , you see the nationally representative sample average SATВ® score is 1120. The 70th percentile SATВ® test taker is 1170.
The former number compares how students did on the SATВ® to an overall sample of all students grades 11-12, regardless of whether or not they took the SATВ®. The latter number applies the actual scores of students in the past three graduating classes to the latest SATВ®.
A decent SAT® score would probably be something around the 50th percentile. Using the nationally representative sample, you’d find this to be a 1010. Looking at just SAT® test takers, the 50th percentile SAT® score would be between a 1050 and 1060.
A bad SAT® score is quite subjective, but if you were looking at it from a percentiles standpoint, it could be any score below the 25th percentile. Looking at the nationally representative sample, this is between 870 and 880. For just SAT® test takers, it’d be a 910.
Is 1600 a good SATВ® score?
Yes! A 1600 is not just a good SAT® score, it’s a perfect SAT® score. Just like the ACT®, depending on the particular test, there is sometimes leeway on how to get a perfect SAT® score. In other words, there are edge cases where you may be able to get one Reading question wrong and still get an 800 for your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section Score.
How hard is it to get a 1400 on the SATВ®?
It can be pretty tough to score a 1400 on the SAT®. Scoring a 1400 means you’re in the 97th percentile for the nationally representative sample and the 94th percentile among SAT® test takers.
Furthermore, if you were to assume you wanted to score a 700 in both sections and you play around with the score calculator above, you’d see that to score a 700 in math, you can only miss around eight questions on average.
Then, to score a 700 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, you’d only be able to miss around eight questions in SAT® Reading and five questions in SAT® Writing.
Is 1200 a good SATВ® score?
A 1200 is a good SAT® score. When you review the 2019 SAT® score trends, you’d see that a 1200 equates to the 81st percentile for the nationally representative sample, and 74th percentile for SAT® test takers. This means scoring a 1200 on the SAT® puts you in the top quartile of high school students taking the test.
What is the average SATВ® score?
The average SATВ® score is typically between 1010 and 1060. This is pulled from the SATВ® score trend data in which the 50th percentile for the nationally representative sample was a 1010, and among SATВ® test takers, the 50th percentile fell between a 1050 and 1060.
Why is the SATВ® exam curved?
The SATВ® exam itself is not curved relative to test takers. That being said, the College Board does put each test through a process referred to as equating. This process ensures no student receives an advantage or disadvantage from taking a particular for on the SATВ® on a particular day.
In other words, it ensures a test score of 500 equals a test score 500 on an SATВ® from another day.
The equating process is also why you’ll notice that when you use our SAT® score calculator, there are sometimes variances in how you might have scored on one practice test versus another. There can be cases for instance where getting a perfect score in Math was necessary for an 800, while you could get one question wrong in another.
Since the last SATВ® change in March 2016, the SATВ® has remained consistent in terms of how raw scores translate to scale scores.
How do I read my SATВ® Score Report?

Upon logging in, you’ll see your total SAT® score, which combines your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section and Math Section score.
In your SAT® Score Report, you’ll also find specifics on your test scores (number correct and incorrect in each section), cross-test scores (how you analyze texts and solve problems that are interdisciplinary with Science and History) and subscores (how you performed on specific key concepts).
These sections will be color coded so you know exactly where you need to improve.

To figure out your SAT® superscore, you’ll need to first compile all of the test days you took the SAT®. Next, look for your highest scores for SAT® Evidence-Based Reading and SAT® Math.
So for example, if you got a 700 on one SAT® Math test, and a 750 on another, you’d choose the 750.
Finally, total your highest scores — this is your SAT® superscore.

This is tough to know right now because data is still being gathered and in some cases being reported differently since credit reporting agencies have different types of models and scoring methodologies.
Because COVID-19 is such an unprecedented event, there is a lot of work being done to figure out how different situations should be treated and reported, which impact credit scores. But there are a few things that I think consumers should be aware of:
The Fair Credit Reporting Act or FCRA is a law passed in 1970 that gives consumers certain rights when it comes to their credit reports including the ability for consumers to dispute credit reporting errors when those occur. It also requires that “furnishers” (those that produce credit reports) report accurate and up-to-date information. Consumers that are impacted by COVID-19 can receive loan accommodations without having their credit score impacted. When Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) in March 2020, part of it ensured that consumers that are impacted by COVID-19 can receive loan accommodations without having their credit score impacted. This means that when banks and lenders provide loan payment deferrals and other forms of relief to consumers due to COVID-19, it should not negatively impact their credit score.

How Do Personal Loans Affect Your Credit Score?
We currently know that many American consumers are heavily impacted by COVID-19 and have received payment deferrals from their banks or lenders. While these deferrals should not affect their credit score, there are different credit reporting agencies and different credit scoring models (this is why you may have a slightly different score when you go to different credit agencies). The current challenge is to make sure these loan payment deferrals are being treated consistently. Otherwise, it is difficult to fully understand how credit scores will be impacted.
As a consumer, you have the right to view your credit score and these days, many fintech companies and banks have made that both easier and free to do. It’s a good idea to check your score regularly and make sure you contact your credit reporting agency if you notice anything inaccurate especially if you’ve received a loan payment deferral due to COVID-19.
I would recommend this resource from the Federal Reserve Board division known as the Division of Consumer and Community Affairs tasked to do ongoing research on these topics including conducting ongoing surveys to understand the financial health of American households.
