Ukrainian citizens Lev Parnas and Andrey Kukushkin were found guilty of illegal financing of the US elections. This is stated in the message of U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, published on the website of the United States Department of Justice.
A federal jury in New York unanimously concluded that the defendants illegally sent money to the 2018 midterm elections in order to "gain influence on American politicians and candidates with an eye to making huge profits in the business related to the legalization of marijuana." According to TASS, Parnas was found guilty of five counts of acquiring political influence for money he allegedly received from an unnamed Russian source. He was also found guilty of making false statements about the sources of funds for the financing of the election campaign. In total, he faces up to 55 years in prison. Kukushkin was found guilty of two counts of assisting Parnassus, in total he faces up to ten years in prison.
On October 2, 2019, Deutsche Welle included entrepreneurs from Florida Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas in the list of Ukrainian "friends" of the then-current US President Donald Trump. It was clarified that the American leader announced them in a scandalous telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky. They allegedly helped Giuliani to contact the former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin.

The states of Eastern Europe were afraid of switching the focus of the United States from Russia to the confrontation with China. This is reported by Defense News.
According to the publication, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, at a meeting of NATO ministers, said that the technological sphere will become one of the main ones in countering Beijing. "Alliances like NATO are one of our greatest strengths," he stressed.
At the same time, according to the material, the Eastern European allies of the United States are concerned about the continued aggravation of existing problems between the West and Russia. For this reason, the partners called on the United States to pay attention to this region and strengthen its military presence in it.
Despite these statements, the White House administration continues to insist that the allies need to unite against China's military aggression in the Pacific and human rights violations.
Earlier, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the United States will continue to adhere to its obligations in relations with Taiwan and will help counter the threat posed by China. According to her, the US commitment to Taiwan is dictated by the need to maintain peace and stability in the Strait and in the Asia-Pacific region.

The head of the faction of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the Bundestag Rolf Mutzenich criticized the statement about NATO's readiness to use atomic weapons against Russia, voiced by German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. This is reported by TASS with reference to an interview with Mutzenich to the DPA agency.
The deputy called the minister's words irresponsible and the same baseless threats coming from the Russian side. Mutzenich warned Kramp-Karrenbauer against unwinding the "spiral of escalation" and reminded her of the security policy in Germany, which consists in using all opportunities for dialogue.
The deputy urged the minister not to burden the work of the new government with such statements. The SPD should lead the future ruling coalition of Germany.
On October 21, Kramp-Karrenbauer, in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio station, stated that NATO is ready to counter threats from Russia, including with the use of military means. She noted that Russia needs to make clear the alliance's position and act on it in a frightening way, "so that no one comes to the idea of attacking NATO partners in the Baltic States or in the Black Sea region."
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, in response to Kramp-Karrenbauer's statement, noted that the military alliance still lives according to the schemes of the Cold War, directing its main efforts to fend off the so-called threat from the East.

Melinda Haring, Deputy Director of the Eurasian Center at the Atlantic Council, called the "big problem" of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, which he has because of Russia and Hungary. She wrote about this in an article for the National Interest magazine.
According to the analyst, such a problem for Zelensky was Hungary's strategy for the reintegration of its historical lands in Ukraine. In particular, we are talking about Transcarpathia, where, according to her, a network of schools in Hungarian has been created. In addition, the community controls Hungarian newspapers, websites and TV channels in the west of the country, and many residents of this region have Hungarian citizenship.
Against this background, Hungary regularly blocks Ukraine's further integration into NATO and stubbornly raises a fuss about the language problem in Western Ukraine, Haring noted. In her opinion, this situation is in the hands of Russia, which can "further complicate the life of Kiev."
In 2019, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office added the Atlantic Council to the list of undesirable organizations.
On September 27, Gazprom signed two gas supply contracts with Hungary until the end of 2036. The Russian company will sell Budapest 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which will flow to Hungarian territory through Serbia and Austria.
On October 1, Gazprom announced the termination of the transit of Russian gas to Hungary through the territory of Ukraine. The Foreign Ministry of the country called the decision of the Hungarian authorities an unfriendly act to please the Kremlin and promised to appeal to the European Commission.
